6 reasons why microwaved food is dangerous for you

danger of microwaved food

Whether you get home late, after a long day at the office or find yourself craving a quick hot and filling meal, grabbing a microwave dish often seems preferable to ordering another unhealthy, expensive type of food.

However, while many microwave meals may label themselves as healthy or diet-friendly, experts say they often do more harm than good. According to a 2015 study published in The British Journal of Nutrition; there were “surprise adverse health effects” among adult subjects who consumed microwave meals, on a daily basis.

The study researchers found that the consumption of “heat-and-eat” meals, was associated with not only poor overall food quality (including increased fat consumption and decreased fiber intake); but a wide range of surprising health effects.

How does a microwave work?

Microwaves are without a doubt one of the most modern inventions that allow us to heat up conveniently and fast; or prepare our food in a few minutes. Microwaves are very easy to use, they save energy and time, and use less electricity than the gas used for ovens.

Microwaves use a form of electromagnetic energy that include light waves, the same as radio waves. Each microwave has a magnetron, a tube where the radiation is produced, of approximately 2450 Mhz, which interacts with the molecules of food and heat it in this way.

All energy waves in this appliance change polarity from positive to negative in each cycle, millions of times per second.

This molecular friction not only produces heat, but it also harms or damages the amino acids. By transforming them into toxic substances for our health and bodies.

It is important to note that one should never open a microwave’s box to try to fix it if it broke down or to try and see how it made or for any other reason. This is because microwaves can retain electricity and if altered or tampered with in this way can cause fatal electrocution.

The effects of microwaved food:

1- You may be at increased risk for some cancers:

The list of ingredients on the back of a microwavable meal, may not tell the whole story in terms of what you are actually consuming. Or anything at all about what that microwave and its waves will do to your food.

Using electromagnetic radiation, microwaves expose foods and containers in which foods are heated to extreme heat. This superheating can cause the chemical components of the containers surrounding your food to break down and insert little toxic particles in your food. When ingested in small quantities this may not affect you, but they will cause extreme problems over time and with continuous consumption.

Note that among the most concerning of these chemicals is Bisphenol A (BPA). The consumption of which has been linked to a variety of cancers. According to a 2015 review of research published in Medicine (Baltimore), BPA is linked to the development and propagation of breast and prostate cancer cells. And, if you want to protect your health, it will be better to stay away from microwaves.

2- Your blood pressure may increase:

Just because a microwave meal is low in calories, doesn’t mean it’s good for you. In fact, the copious amounts of salt used to make many microwave meals could contribute to serious health problems down the line.

Microwave-ready meals are high in sodium and other preservatives. High sodium foods accelerate and trigger Blood pressure problems and can lead to heart disease, blindness and more.

3- You may be retaining water and gaining weight:

It’s not just your cardiovascular health that’s at risk, when you eat sodium-laden microwave meals.  Microwave meals are high in sodium like mentioned before, which can lead to water retention.

Over time, this can lead to other unhealthy habits, like getting thirsty while eating and consuming a lot of water during meals; which can cause bloating.

According to a 2017 study, just a 6-gram increase in salt intake, which is the equivalent to about 1.2 teaspoons of salt; can lead to water retention bad enough to cause dehydration. Plus most microwaved meals will lose a big deal of their nutritional value and be just plain, fattening calories that don’t benefit your health or body in any way.

4- You could be putting yourself at risk for food poisoning:

Although microwaving has been thought of as a way to kill everything from viruses to bacteria, that may not mean you’re on the safe side when it comes to food poisoning. In fact, it’s one of the side effects of microwaving meals that could leave you unwell and very sick for some time.

Microwavable foods require high temperatures, which sometimes for different factors may not distribute equally. This may be because of the way you put it in the microwave or maybe a part of the food was not exposed enough to the waves. Either way, a few parts of your food may not be exposed to a high enough temperature to kill bacteria.

The use of microwaves is also linked to various diseases such; as colds, food poisoning, cancers and more. The cell barriers of vegetables heated with this appliance are completely weakened, when seen with a microscope.

5- Increase weight and waistline.

If you eat microwave meals in; an attempt to slim down your waistline, then you should know just how absurd this is.

According to the British Journal of Nutrition study, greater consumption of prepared foods, including microwave meals, was found to be independently associated with abdominal obesity.

6- You run the risk of overheating your food:

Over heated food, a phenomenon specific to this household appliance. When we put food in a microwave a container and heat it, it can approach boiling temperatures.

Sometimes a container can burst by instantaneous boiling or melting, when we’re trying to boil something in the microwave. When the door is opened; the change in temperature can trigger this to happen. And, this can cause severe damage to our hands, or even face, chest, or thighs, etc.

It is necessary to be very careful when heating water, whether it is tea, coffee, or a semi-liquid products such as milk. Not to mention the importance of not overheating food or eating extremely hot food as it can burn our mouth internally, which in turn can cause great discomfort and even bad breath.

If you suffer from bad breath, this may be the cause. However no need to worry; check this article now and get a fresh morning breath forever and ever!
