Being dumped can be a really tough experience. It can feel like your whole world has been turned upside down and you’re not quite sure how to pick up the pieces.
Although being dumped sucks, and there are no two ways about that, there are still ways to get through it with your dignity intact. So how can you do that?
5 Steps to handle being dumped with dignity and grafecully:
1- Don’t do anything extreme or crazy:
First and foremost, don’t do anything crazy. Don’t send angry texts or try to confront the person who dumped you in public. That will only make you look bad and give them more ammunition to use against you.
It can be easy to let go of them if you try and accept that the relationship is over. This can be difficult, but it’s important to remember that you’re better off without someone who doesn’t want to be with you.
So don’t be bitter and don’t try to get revenge on your ex. This will only make you look petty and immature.
2- Cry and grieve in private:
Another very important thing is to give yourself time to grieve. It’s okay to cry, be angry, and feel lost as long as you do all of it in the privacy of your bedroom. Give yourself permission to feel whatever you’re feeling and to take the time you need to heal.
Whatever you do, understand that it’s not an option to cry in front of your ex. Neither is begging your ex to take you to beg, obviously, that’s the opposite of leaving with dignity.
In addition, try to reach out to your friends and family for support. They can offer a shoulder to cry on and help you to see the situation in a better light. Make sure you don’t let any common friends of your and your ex see you at your weakest as they can tell them about how miserable you are.
Ideally, you want to seem unbothered to your ex which may confuse and leave them puzzled. But, it’s still better than seeming so desperate and needy when they’re trying to get rid of you. Remember that you’re not alone. There are plenty of people who have gone through the same thing and come out the other side stronger and better for it. So stay strong and lift your chin up.
Again, don’t be afraid to lean on your support system during this tough time.
3- Take some time for yourself:
Another thing you should do is to take some time for yourself. Go on a trip, spend time with friends and family, and do things that make you happy. Don’t try to force yourself into a new relationship just to make yourself feel better. Keep in mind that most rebound relationships don’t work.
It’s true that being dumped often feels like a punch to the gut. You might feel embarrassed, rejected, and like you’ll never find love again. That’s why it’s important to take some time to heal and to focus on taking care of yourself. Spend time doing things that make you happy, whether that’s taking up a new hobby or getting a spa treatment.
try to relax and not take the rejection too personally. Remember that there is someone out there who will appreciate and love you for who you are. So use this time to get in a positive mindset too rather than get trapped in a non-ending cycle of sadness and feelings of worthlessness. And, this brings us to the next point:
4- Remember it’s not the end of the world:
When you’ve been dumped, try and remember that this isn’t the end of the world. You will find someone else who loves and appreciates you for who you are. And when you do, you’ll be glad that this last relationship didn’t work out and didn’t waste more of your time, youth, and energy.
The person that dumped you may have their reasons, but at the end of the day, they’re not worth your tears. Being single can be liberating, so use this opportunity to focus on your own happiness. In fact, you can choose to think of it as an opportunity. This is your chance to rediscover who you are and what you want in a partner.
5- No second chances and no staying friends with the ex:
One last thing you can do when you’we just been dumped to preserve your dignity is to vow to never give your ex a second chance. If they’ve had the nerve to dump you, they don’t deserve another opportunity with you, under any circumstance. In fact, go ahead and act like being with them was a mistake in the first place if you’re ever asked by one of your common friends.
Remember that your ex showed their true colors, so why would you want to give them another chance to hurt you? And, why would you hesitate to burn any bridges between the two of you?
Yes, you shouldn’t do something crazy that will come across as petty but you can act like the breakup literally woke you up from a trance or saved your life. It’s not like you’ll ever want to make a fool out of yourself again and date them once more anyway, right? The break-up is permanent, there’s no going back after someone dumped you. That’s if you care about preserving your dignity. If not, then do as you please.
In case you’ve been dumped, we also recommend you don’t stay in touch. It might be tempting to keep tabs on them and see what they’re up to, but all that will do is make it harder for you to move on. So cut ties completely and focus on your own life instead. Staying friends with an ex or in touch after they’ve dumped us can stop us from moving on and even help them lead us on for years to come.
If you decide to go against this advice and be friends with an ex that dumped you, then at least make sure you keep in mind this list of boundaries for being friends with an ex.
