How to spend Christmas as a couple?

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year! Being with your loved ones, sharing meals, opening gifts, and having parties; it’s all so magically stunning. However, what if you’re newly engaged or married and you’ll be far from home on Christmas? Or what if you get to spend it alone with a special someone this year?

Well, don’t worry! You can still have an amazing time and enjoy this beautiful holiday, even if your family is not close. They will still be in your thoughts and you can connect online.

Plus, you’re with your significant other and this is a great opportunity to enjoy each other, create beautiful memories, and start your own Christmas traditions. There are a lot of things you can do to make sure your Christmas as a couple is magical, fun, and full of love.  Here are a few great ideas to help you prepare!

7 Ideas to spend Christmas as a couple:

1. Cook your Christmas meal together:

Food is a big part of Christmas! There’s nothing like sitting down for a delicious, warm, and hearty meal. That’s why cooking is a great way to spend the day together enjoying yourselves.

Even if you’re not a great cook, you can find simple recipes for the food you both like most and make your own version of a Christmas meal. Crack open a bottle of wine or egg nog, play your favorite Christmas songs to get in the spirit, and get cooking together. Plus, what’s simpler than soaking a full chicken with spices, butter, and oil before throwing it in the oven 3 hours before dinner?

Well, maybe not 3 hours, but you get the point. Watch a youtube video and you’ll see that cooking your own chicken or turkey dinner doesn’t have to be complicated. A good and simple side dish could be a pack of baby potatoes coated with herbs and butter and thrown on a separate tray in the same oven!

2. Have a Christmas movie marathon:

If you want to spend a quiet Christmas together, what better way to do that than to turn off the lights, light up a few candles, gather some snacks, and snuggle up on the couch for a Christmas movie marathon?

There are so many great Christmas movies and, chances are, you haven’t watched your favorites in a while. You can learn a lot about each other based on your favorite movies, so this is a good opportunity to share something, laugh together and bond over a lovely, and interesting Christmas movie.

3. Bake Christmas cookies:

If cooking is not your forte and you believe it’s a recipe for disaster, maybe baking will be more up your alley. It’s still a good time and it’s a great bonding experience for couples. Plus, we all love Christmas cookies!

Make sure you get cookie cutters in fun, Christmassy shapes, and find a recipe you’re comfortable trying. You will have a lot of fun baking together and decorating the cookies. Don’t forget to get your hands on some icing too.

4. Honor some of your family’s Christmas traditions:

Every family has different Christmas traditions. Since you’re away from them, you can honor some of your family traditions and your partner can honor some of theirs; it’s a nice bonding experience and you’ll enjoy discovering new things about one another’s families.

You can share stories about your favorite memories as children of these Christmas traditions and talk about what you like most about them. It’s just a great way to get to know each other more and connect at an emotional level.

5. Create your own Christmas traditions:

Though it’s important to honor and cherish your childhood traditions, it’s also important to create your own as a couple. You’ll be sharing your lives for a long time hopefully, so you can take this opportunity to pick a few things that you’d like to do together around this time of the year every time.

Whether that’s watching a Christmas movie you both love, baking the same cookie recipe every year, making a Christmas Day brunch, going to a Christmas market, etc. There are a lot of things you can turn into traditions you both enjoy!

6. Get silly Christmas pajamas:

It doesn’t matter how old you are, having a pair of silly Christmas pajamas will never be a bad idea. Looking for the perfect, matching Christmas pajamas can be a lot of fun.

You can use them to take goofy photos to send to friends and family! Plus, this can easily turn into a Christmas tradition because you can get new pajamas every year and start a goofy Christmas photo album for posterity.

7. Host a Christmas party:

If you feel like being around friends, hosting a Christmas party can be the way to go! You can plan it together and decide what kind of food and drinks to serve, how many people to invite, how to decorate the place, and maybe even assign a theme.

For example, you can have an ugly Christmas sweater party, a Christmas pajama party, a white Christmas party, Christmas in NY or Paris party, etc. Just have fun with it and don’t bite off more than you can chew. Christmas doesn’t need to be stressful.

Conclusion:

Though spending Christmas as a couple away from your families can be difficult, you can still have an amazing time and create happy memories and new traditions with your significant others. Let the Christmas spirit guide you and you’ll surely enjoy yourselves!
